We’ve selected the top ten most prestigious award ceremonies that take place every year and celebrate the success of people in medicine, science, film, music, and literature.

  1. The Nobel Prize The 10 Most Prestigious Awards

The Nobel Prize was established by the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel and awarded annually by Swedish and Norwegian institutions in recognition of academic, cultural and scientific advances. The Nobel Prize is considered to be the most prestigious award available in the field of chemistry, literature, physics, physiology, peace activism, or medicine. Among the winners of the prize are Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, Marie Curie, and Ernest Hemingway.


  1. The Booker Prize

The 10 Most Prestigious AwardsThe Booker Prize is awarded each year to the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom and it was first awarded in 1969. The prize is internationally renowned and has brought recognition, reward and readership not only to the winners or the prize but also to the novelists who have been shortlisted.

The selection of the winner commences with the formation of an advisory committee, which includes a writer, two publishers, a literary agent, a bookseller, a librarian and a chairperson appointed by the Booker Prize Foundation. The panel then appoints the judges, who change every year. Among the winners of the Booker Prize are Anna Burns, George Saunders, Hilary Mantel, and John Banville.

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars are awarded annually for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The first award was presented in 1929, which makes the Oscars the oldest awards ceremony in the world. The Academy Award of Merit or the Oscar statuette is made of gold-plated bronze on a black metal base and portrays a knight holding a sword.

Amongst the winners of the Academy awards are Emma Stone Cate Blanchett, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale and Benedict Cumberbatch.

  1. The BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is a world-leading independent art charity. The Awards are held at the Royal Albert Hall in London and honour the best national and foreign films. The categories include best film, best director, best actor and actress in a leading role, best original screenplay and best documentary. Amongst the BAFTA are Bradley Cooper, Melissa McCarthy, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams.



  1. The Palme d’Or The 10 Most Prestigious Awards

The Palme d’Or, or the Golden Palm was introduced in 1955 and is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. The prize has been redesigned several times throughout history and in 2017 the award was remade to celebrate the festival’s 70th anniversary. Some of the films that have been awarded the Golden Palm are Wild at Heart, The Tree of Life, The Pianist, and Dancer in the Dark.

  1. The Pulitzer Prize

The 10 Most Prestigious AwardsThe Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism in the United States. The prizes are awarded annually in 21 categories, where each winner receives a certificate and $15, 000 cash award.  There is an entry fee and entries must fit in at least one of the specific categories in order to be considered for the prize. The categories include public service, breaking news reporting, explanatory reporting, editorial writing, feature photography and more. Winning novels of the Pulitzer Prize include The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Plague of Doves by Lousie Erdrich.



  1. The Golden Globes The 10 Most Prestigious Awards

The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and reward excellence in film and television. The qualifying eligibility period for nominations is the calendar year from 1st January to 31st December. The Golden Globe Awards is broadcasted in 167 countries worldwide and generally ranks as the third most watched awards show each year. Meryl Streep holds the record for the most competitive Golden Globe wins and most nominations. Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Helen Mirren are among the actresses that have two acting wins in the same year.

The BRIT awards are the British Phonographic Industry’s annual popular music awards. The awards were first introduced in 1977 and are considered to be the highest profile music awards ceremony in the United Kingdom. Ed Sheeran, Little Mix, Sam Smith, Paloma Faith, and Foo Fighters are amongst the ones who have won the prestigious Britannia award.



  1. The GrammysThe 10 Most Prestigious Awards

The Grammy Award is presented by the Recording Academy and recognises and honours achievements in the music industry. The first award ceremony was held in 1959 and it took place in two different locations. Interestingly enough, the name Eddie was considered for the name of the award, to honour the inventor of the phonograph, Thomas Edison. Top Grammy winners of all time include Alicia Keys, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, and Jay-Z.

  1. The Breakthrough Prize

The Breakthrough Prize is a set of international awards recognising outstanding contributions in Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics, and Mathematics. Laureates receive $3 million each in prize money and attend a ceremony to honour their achievements and honour the next generation of scientists.
