How Does Laser Engraving Work?

Many people often wonder how we create our stunning, intricately detailed 3D designs, so today we’re going to let you in on the secret.

There are many ways to mark or personalise an object, from electrochemical marking to inkjet marking, however, none of these methods will quite create as high-quality image as 3D laser engraving. 3D laser engraving offers precision, accuracy, and speed, as well as the option of 2D or 3D engraving. Most importantly 3D laser engraving offers the perfect personalisation method for one-of-a-kind personalised awards, trophies, and gifts.

Let’s start by looking at, what is 3D Laser Engraving?

What is 3D Laser Engraving?

3D laser engraving is the process of creating images in glass to create a stunning and detailed effect. The laser is focused at different parts on the material, at different strengths to create the overall 3D or 2D appearance. Additionally, the laser engraving machine adds sloped edges to the image at different depths, the result of which creates spectacular 3D masterpieces.

How Does 3D Laser Engraving Work?

Once as design has been created and approved, the process starts by using specialist design software to convert the image into a format which the laser engraving machine can understand for processing.

We use a subsurface laser engraving machine to create our masterpieces. The specialist laser within the machine focuses its concentrated beams of light at a precise point below the surface of the crystal. Each point in the image is plotted in the final crystal piece. The laser then focuses a high-powered beam on each three-dimensional coordinate which creates a stunning 3D image once completed. Once the beam reaches the focal point, the ultra-powerful laser makes a tiny fracture inside the crystal. The laser then moves onto the next plotted coordinate and makes another fracture, repeating the process until the final design is complete.

Unlike traditional 2D laser engraving, 3D engraving takes a little longer to achieve the spectacular results due to the intricacy of the designs, however, we can assure you that the results are worth the wait.

What is the Difference Between 2D and 3D laser engraving?

When it comes to 2D laser engraving, the design is defined by its length and its width, with each fracture being made at the same depth to the last. Whereas with 3D laser engraving, the engraving is defined by its length, width, and height, creating a three-dimensional design.

Why Use 3D Laser Engraving, over 2D Laser Engraving?

3D laser engraving offers a range of benefits. These include…

  1. Quality – 3D laser engraving offers a far higher level of engraving quality when compared with other engraving methods. The laser beam used in the engraving process is non-invasive which means the surface of the crystal is left un-marked, creating a stunning well-finished product.
  2. Flexibility – 3D laser engraving can produce clear engravings on a non-flat surface. For example, triangles, cylindrical shapes, circles etc. This allows you greater flexibility when choosing a crystal shape for your award, trophy, or gift, as well as greater flexibility in your design scope.
  3. Better personalisation – the technology used to create 3D laser engraved crystal items provides exacting accuracy that allows you to bring an otherwise 2D image to life. 3D laser engraving can create a stunning and visually spectacular personalised item.
