The Biggest Awards of Each Month in 2023

From prestigious awards in TV and film to ceremonies celebrating the best in global business, there’s a lot to keep track of. Keep reading to discover the biggest awards you should be keeping an eye out for every month every year!

January

The Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe Awards take place near the beginning of January every year for outstanding achievements in television and film. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the awards recognise excellence worldwide and first took place in 1944 – making this ceremony one of the oldest in the industry.

The Golden Globes consist of 27 different categories, including:

  • Best Motion Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress
  • Best Television Series

Winners of the 2023 awards included huge names such as Michelle Yeoh, Steven Spielberg, Cate Blanchett and Zendaya. The next Golden Globes will be presented on Sunday 10th January 2024, so get that date in your diary!

February

The GRAMMY Awards 

The prestigious GRAMMY Awards pay homage to the classic gramophone in both their name and trophy. They’re held around the start of February every year, and many consider them the holy grail of awards in the music industry. The GRAMMY Awards recognise and celebrate musicians of every age and genre across the globe. 

There are an incredible 86 categories in the GRAMMY Awards right now, including the ‘Big Four’ which span across all genres from rap and pop to jazz and rock:

  • Album of the Year
  • Record of the Year
  • Song of the Year
  • Best New Artist

2023 saw the 65th ceremony of the awards, and winners included Lizzo, Adele, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar. 

March

The Academy Awards

This year, March will see more celebrations for the film industry in the form of the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. The first-ever ceremony took place back in 1929 – making it the oldest in the entertainment industry. The iconic awards draw the attention of the whole world as the best in the film industry are recognised for their artistic and technical merit. 

The 23 categories of the Oscars have remained largely unchanged since the turn of the century, apart from the addition of the Best Animated Feature Film award in 2001, and the discontinuation of the Best Sound Editing award in 2019. Other categories include: 

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best International Feature Film

Notable films awarded in 2022’s ceremony included Dune, Encanto, Cruella and Coda. 

April

The Olivier Awards

Held this year at the beginning of April, the Olivier Awards recognise the best in London professional theatre. Internationally regarded as the highest honour in British theatre, the awards were renamed after legendary actor Lord Laurence Olivier in 1984. 

The 29 categories in the Olivier Awards include: 

  • Best New Play
  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress
  • Best Musical Revival
  • Best Director
  • Best Costume Design

Dame Judi Dench, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Sir Ian McKellen are among the most decorated individuals, with the most successful musicals at the awards including Matilda, Hamilton and Cabaret.

May

The Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

The prestigious Palme d’Or has been the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival since it was introduced in 1955. The festival itself celebrates the art and influence of films across the world, with the Palme d’Or, or ‘Golden Palm’, awarded to the best film at the festival. 

Other awards at the Cannes Film Festival include:

  • Palme d’Or du court métrage for the best short film
  • Grand Prix – the grand prize
  • Prix du Jury – the jury prize
  • Prix du scénario for the best screenplay
  • Prix Un Certain Regard celebrating young talent and innovation

Previous winners of the Palme d’Or include I, Daniel Blake, L’Enfant, Pulp Fiction and La Dolce Vita.

June

The Peabody Awards

Since 1941, the Peabody Awards have celebrated excellence in storytelling in the entertainment industry. Rather than focusing on commercial success and popularity, the awards honour the most powerful and enlightening stories across television and radio, as well as internet content. 

30 Peabody Awards are presented every year, in various areas of excellence:

  • Career achievement
  • Podcast and radio
  • Children’s
  • Documentary
  • News
  • Entertainment

Recent honorees include television series Succession, Chernobyl and Stranger Things, news documentaries China Undercover and Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor, and journalists Judy Woodruff and Dan Rather.

July

The British Citizen Awards

The British Citizen Awards are held twice a year, in both January and July, and recognise individuals who have had an incredible impact on their community. The sought-after awards are given to nominees who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds across the UK. 

The BCAs currently recognise individuals in 8 categories, including service to:

As well as International Achievement and Volunteering & Charitable giving.

August

MTV Video Music Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) celebrate the best music videos of the last year, and features a star-studded list of hosts, performers and winners. Dubbed ‘the Superbowl for youth’, millions of young people tune into the ceremony every year, and the winners of many of the major categories are determined by public vote.

There are currently 25 categories at the VMAs, including:

  • Video of the Year
  • Artist of the Year
  • Best Group
  • Best Pop
  • Best Collaboration
  • Best Choreography

September

The Emmy Awards

September sees one of the few annual iterations of the Emmy Awards, specifically the Primetime Emmys, which recognise excellence in television programmes aired on weekday evenings in the US. The Primetime Emmys were previously known simply as the Emmys until the International Emmy Award and Daytime Emmy Award were created in the 70s. 

The Primetime Emmys include categories such as:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Comedy Series
  • Outstanding Reality Competition Series
  • Outstanding Talk Series
  • Outstanding Television Movie

As well as awards for outstanding actresses, actors, directors and writing in each category. 

Successful series include Game of Thrones, Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Breaking Bad and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

October

The Booker Prize


The Booker Prize is a highly respected literary award which is given annually to the best novel written in English and published in the UK or Ireland. The Booker Prize is so coveted that even inclusion in the shortlist or longlist is a huge achievement. The International Booker Prize, held in May, recognises literary works originally written in another language and translated into English.

Though the October ceremony usually consists of one main award, several special awards have been given over the years to celebrate various anniversaries of the prize. These special awards have included:

  • Booker of Bookers 1993, where a winner of winners was chosen after 25 awards
  • The Best of the Booker 2008, where the public voted between 6 shortlisted books
  • The Golden Man Booker 2018 which also consisted of a public vote

The most recent winners of the Booker Prize have included The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka, The Promise by Damon Galgut, and Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart.

November

The Chamber Business Awards

In November, we move into the world of business with the Chamber Business Awards, presented by the British Chambers of Commerce. As one of the biggest events in the business calendar, the award recognises and promotes the best of British business. Regional heats take place across the country before the national winners are announced each November. 

Categories at the Chamber Business Awards include: 

  • The Winner of Winners
  • The Problem Solver (Business Diversification Award)
  • The Game Changer (Entrepreneur of the Year)
  • The Equality Trailblazer (Diversity and Inclusion Award)
  • The Community Champion (Community Business of the Year)

Winners of the 2022 Chamber Business awards included One+All, Channing Digester, and Viberoptix.

December

The Nobel Prizes

An exciting year of respected awards ends with one of the biggest of them all – the Nobel Prizes, named after their creator, Alfred Nobel. Consisting of 5 separate awards, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded to those who have “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind” in the past year since 1901, making it the oldest award on our list. 

Nobel Prizes are awarded in the following categories:

The Nobel Prizes have had a huge cultural impact, often used in fiction as a symbol of great scientific or literary achievement. Notable winners include Malala Yousafzai, Barack Obama, Marie Curie and Ivan Pavlov.
